Catholic Cathedral College is a welcoming and inclusive state-integrated Catholic school located in the heart of Christchurch. We hold a unique place in our city’s educational landscape as the only co-educational Catholic College in the central city, providing a seamless learning journey for both boys and girls from Year 7 through to Year 13. This structure allows siblings to learn together in one location and offers a stable, supportive environment as students transition from their intermediate years into senior secondary education.

Our central city campus serves as a modern learning hub, where the city itself becomes an extension of our classroom. Being situated in the CBD gives our students easy access to world-class resources such as Tūranga, the city’s central library, as well as the cultural and recreational opportunities of the Riverside area. This "city-campus" feel prepares students for life beyond school, fostering independence and confidence within a safe and supervised framework. Because we are a city-wide school, our community is drawn from all corners of Christchurch, creating a rich social fabric that is not restricted by local enrollment zones.

Diversity is at the very heart of who we are. We are proud to be a multicultural community where over 60% of our students are bilingual, speaking two or more languages fluently. This creates a naturally inclusive atmosphere where international students feel an immediate sense of belonging. Our Special Character and Catholic values underpin everything we do, guided by the principles of Manaakitanga (care and hospitality), Whanaungatanga (family and connection), Whakapono (faith), and Panekiretanga (excellence). We strive to ensure that every young person feels confident in their own identity, culture, and abilities.

Academically, we are committed to helping every student reach their potential through a future-focused curriculum. Our NCEA results consistently sit above national averages, reflecting the high expectations we have for our learners. We provide clear, personalised pathways toward University Entrance as well as a wide range of vocational opportunities in fields such as Engineering, Building, and Hospitality. For those joining us from overseas, we provide specialised English language support (ESOL) and individual mentoring to ensure academic success across all subjects.

We believe that a truly well-rounded education requires a balance between academic study and personal growth. Students at Catholic Cathedral College are encouraged to be fully immersed in school life through an extensive range of extra-curricular activities. Our sporting culture is particularly strong, with more than 75% of our students participating in at least one sport. We are proud of our excellent facilities, which include outdoor courts for Netball and Basketball and an indoor gymnasium used for Badminton, Basketball, and Volleyball, as well as dedicated field spaces for Football and Rugby training. Students have the opportunity to represent the College in a wide variety of codes, including Basketball, Football, Netball, Rugby, Volleyball, and Badminton.

Our cultural and performing arts programs further reflect the rich diversity of our student body. All students are invited to join our cultural groups, where skilled tutors lead our Kapa Haka, Pasifika, and Filipino groups in performances both locally and nationally. In the arts, we offer an innovative music program where all Year 7 and 8 students learn a musical instrument, feeding into performance groups ranging from our junior orchestra to various bands and choirs. Opportunities in drama are equally central to school life, highlighted by our bi-annual major production. Beyond the stage and the field, students can challenge themselves through debating, the Science Fair, and our Creative Writing Club. Throughout all these activities, a core focus remains on community service, reflecting our school values and encouraging students to contribute positively to the world around them.

We look forward to welcoming you to our community—a place where you'll be known by name, truly supported, and part of the family from day one.

About Christchurch

Christchurch is the South Island’s largest city and the gateway to Canterbury. Rebuilt with modern spaces and riverside precincts, it pairs established schools and tertiary options with easy access to beaches, the Port Hills, Banks Peninsula and alpine recreation.

Canterbury Region

The Canterbury Region on New Zealand’s South Island is a region of dramatic contrast — from sweeping plains, mighty braided rivers and the high Southern Alps through to coastal beaches at the Pacific. It encompasses the major city of Christchurch and wide rural districts, making it both a centre of culture and a backbone of agriculture and industry. The region’s economic strength, combined with space for growth and educational infrastructure, makes it well-suited for international students who want access to big-city amenities and outdoor adventure.
