Hutt Valley High School

Secondary school in Lower Hutt, New Zealand

Welcome to Hutt Valley High School

Hutt Valley High School is a coeducational secondary school in Lower Hutt, just 20 minutes from Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. With approximately 1,900 students, we are the largest secondary school in the Wellington region. Each year, we welcome around 100 international students from more than 15 countries into our diverse community.

Founded in 1926, our school provides high-quality education in a positive, inclusive and supportive environment. Student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do and is valued alongside academic, cultural and sporting achievement. Our values guide daily school life: we are kind, we are welcoming, we persevere and we achieve.

International students can choose from a wide range of subjects while working towards New Zealand’s internationally recognised National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). Outside the classroom, students can experience New Zealand school life through rugby, football, netball, basketball, cricket, volleyball, kapa haka, music and drama. These activities help students make friends, build confidence, discover new interests and become part of our school community.

Although Hutt Valley High School is large, there is a place for everyone. International Director Jodie Murden and her dedicated team get to know each student’s interests, goals and academic priorities. They provide personalised pastoral and academic support, helping students settle into life in New Zealand and make the most of their time here.

Our international students receive an authentic New Zealand education while building friendships and memories that can last a lifetime.
